Tales of triumph: Annual report design for a CBSE school
How do you communicate with a parent-teacher community?
Santhanam Vidhyalaya (CBSE) in Trichy takes great pride in its students, encouraging excellence across academics, sports and the arts. In order to honour and appreciate the children's hard work, while also acknowledging their own role in supporting their students, they needed a concrete way to showcase student achievements.
From this need came the idea to create and circulate an impactful annual report -- a book that would document a full academic year's worth of news, triumphs, and cultural events, to be shared amongst teaching staff, parents and students.
But the school faced two issues:
1) Organising several pages of densely packed content into one standardised layout.
2) Incorporating the school's brand identity consistently, without erasing the 'why' behind the report.
Form, function & feeling
To put it simply, the report needed to look good, feel authentic, and become a piece of the school's history that its students and alumni would want to keep going back to.
Instead of simply focusing on its appearance alone, our intention was to create a book that was:
1) On brand (form),
2) Easy to navigate (function),
3) And brought out what the school wanted to highlight the most -- a sense of pride (feeling).
The palette was already there, we just had to choose our strokes wisely. The idea was to utilise the school's vibrant colours of orange and purple to add life to each page, while also making clear colour-coded divisions between the academic and sports achievements, or the arts and inter-school events.
With finer details, like graphic icons of medals and trophies, we made sure every child featured in the report was given their own spotlight -- so eager parents and guardians could easily find their wards (and maybe take photos of them to show off in the family group chats).
Impactful design you'll always remember
The end result was 104 pages of distilled pride. An annual report that was now more like a book of memories, a keepsake that both parents and students of Santhanam Vidhyalaya will cherish for years to come.
